The video assistant referee (VAR) is an association football assistant referee that reviews decisions made by the head referee with the use of video footage and a headset for communication.

The Eredivisie has become the latest league to adopt the use of a video assistant referee (VAR) system.

FIFA confirmed earlier this month that VAR will be used in the World Cup and the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has followed suit.

VAR will be used in La Liga from the 2018-19 season and the Eredivisie will also adopt the technology following successful testing in the KNVB Cup.

"Of course we have been working in the background for a while, but the introduction of the VAR will really take shape in the coming months," said KNVB general director Eric Gudde.

VAR is already used in the Bundesliga, Serie A, Major League Soccer in the United States and Australia's A-League, while trials have been carried out in English cup competitions.
