Manchester United are still yet to offer goalkeeper David de Gea a new and improved contract, according to reports.
The 27-year-old, who has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, has less than 16 months left on his current deal at Old Trafford.
De Gea signed his most recent United contract in 2015, but since then his wages have been gulfed by the club’s highest earners Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba.
United are keen to hand the Spaniard a new deal, with a salary matching his status as the best goalkeeper in the world.
However, according to reports from Yahoo Sports, there is no offer currently on the table.
The report claims De Gea’s representatives have been pushing for an improved deal since last year, but United have been slow to act.
It appears the Red Devils are playing a dangerous game, with Real still interested in landing the Spain number one as a replacement for Keylor Navas.
Man United have the option to extend De Gea’s contract until 2020 and manager Jose Mourinho, who shares an agent with the goalkeeper, recently insisted the club are working hard on tying down his future.
“The option, it’s obvious that we’re not going to let the option disappear,” Mourinho said.
“A goalkeeper like he is, and obviously a club that wants to be better and better and better, we are not going to let that year option go away. We are going to try.
“Mr Woodward [United executive vice-chairman] is not on holiday. He barely has holidays. Of course he’s going to try to give him a contract that keeps him here for much longer than that option that of course we are going to execute.
“I just trust the board and the work they do. I don’t negotiate players, I don’t discuss numbers and contracts. I just say what is obvious. Anyone of you would say the same: David is to keep.”
As the report claims, though, it seems they are still working on it.
